"When Peter saw this, he said to them: 'Men of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?" Acts 3:12 (NIV)
We admire rugged men...those who take control, who "seize the day." We honor those who tamed the West. We are inspired by rags-to-riches stories, and of those who say, "I did it my way."
Yet, is the spirit of individual accomplishment necessarily the mark of a Christian? Do we not receive all that we have from God? How can we credit God for the glory that He deserves?
On the day that the crippled man was healed, Peter and John had an incredible opportunity to seize power from the people and to rise to political and popular prominence. The people that gathered were ready to make Peter and John local heroes. Yet, Peter and John did not succumb to the philosophy of doing it their way and taking all the credit. They could have taken responsibility for the healing of the crippled man, and no one would have questioned them. Fortunately, they chose wisely and gave the credit to God.
Take this opportunity to evaluate the accomplishments in your life. Who has been getting the credit? If God has been shoved out of the spotlight, consider putting Him up on the stage of your life. Tell someone today what He is doing in your life, giving the credit to Him for your successes.
